Course Description

The course is designed to meet the education / DAMP training requirements of CASR 99.045 for Safety Sensitive Aviation Activity Employees. This is a modular course which includes sections relating to:

  • policy on drug and alcohol use; and
  • drug and alcohol testing in the workplace; and
  • support and assistance services for people who engage in problematic use of drugs and alcohol; and
  • information about the potential risks to aviation safety from problematic use of drugs and alcohol.

This course includes progressive assessment with the participant having to be aware of the correct answer to each question before being able to proceed further in the course. There is no formal end of course assessment.

This course is narrated for an enhanced learning experience.

 

Accreditation

CASA does not have a system in place to approve Alcohol and Other Drugs  / DAMP training courses. The Australian Online College has obtained written acceptance of the comprehensive course outline used for this course from CASA.

 

Entry Requirements

Students must supply a current, valid email address in order to enrol in the course and must have access to a computer with:

  • Broadband internet access
  • Web Browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox Preferred)
  • Email account access
  • Flash 8 or higher player
  • Sound card and speakers required for listening to narration

 

Career Opportunities

From 2009, alcohol and other drugs training and education must be completed prior to commencing duties in a Safety Sensitive Aviation Activity (SSAA) and at intervals not exceeding 30 months.

The SSAAs specified in the legislation are:
(a) any activity undertaken by a person, other than as a passenger, in an aerodrome testing area; and
(b) calculation of the position of freight, baggage, passengers and fuel on aircraft; and
(c) the manufacture or maintenance of any of the following:

(i) aircraft;
(ii) aeronautical products;
(iii) aviation radionavigation products;
(iv) aviation telecommunication products; and

(d) the certification of maintenance of a kind mentioned in paragraph (c); and
(e) the fuelling and maintenance of vehicles that will be used to fuel aircraft on aerodrome testing areas; and
(f) activities undertaken by an airport security guard or a screening officer in the course of the person’s duties as a guard or officer; and
(g) activities undertaken by a member of the crew of an aircraft in the course of the person’s duties as a crew member; and
(h) the loading and unloading of trolleys containing baggage for loading onto aircraft and the driving of such trolleys; and
(i) activities undertaken by a holder of an air traffic controller licence in the course of the person’s duties as a controller; and
(j) activities undertaken by the supervisor of a holder of an air traffic controller licence in the course of the person’s duties as such a supervisor; and
(k) providing flight information and search and rescue alert services:

(i) to a pilot or operator of an aircraft immediately before the flight of the aircraft; or
(ii) to a pilot or operator of an aircraft, during the flight of the aircraft; or
(iii) as an intermediary for communications between a pilot or operator of the aircraft, and an air traffic controller; and

(l) providing aviation fire fighting services.

 

Time to Complete

You should allow 1 hour of uninterrupted time to complete this course.

 

Requirement for Recurrent Training

CASR 99.080 (1)(a)(iii) requires that Alcohol and Other Drugs Awareness training must be completed at least every 30 months.
